MSRIT - AICTE IDEA LAB empowers students and faculty across all departments with eight state-of-the-art workflows: Additive Manufacturing, Digital Manufacturing, PCB Manufacturing, IoT & AI, Product Development & Reverse Engineering, Printing & Sublimation Technologies, Advanced Engineering Tools, and Welding Technologies. Additional workflows include Business Process Modeling and Knowledge Digitization and Archival, supporting integration with MBA courses, Humanities, and Library systems. Together, these facilities drive ideation, prototyping, and innovation across disciplines.
From a makerspace vision to a fully inaugurated innovation ecosystem, the journey of MSRIT AICTE IDEA LAB reflects sustained effort in planning, prototyping, institutional support and implementation.
Dr. N.V.R. Naidu, Principal, MS Ramaiah Institute of Technology and Dr. Rama Sivakiran Reddy, EDC Member, initiated a proposal to establish a Makerspace at Ramaiah Institute of Technology.
The proposal envisioned a collaborative space for making, learning, exploration, prototyping and sharing using tools such as 3D printers, laser cutters and CNC machines.
MSRIT formally submitted its proposal to the AICTE IDEA Lab Scheme with Dr. N.V.R. Naidu as Chief Mentor, Dr. Chethan Kumar C.S. as Coordinator, and Dr. Rama Sivakiran Reddy as Co-Coordinator.
This marked MSRIT’s first formal step towards establishing an AICTE-supported innovation and prototyping laboratory.
AICTE announced the results of the IDEA Lab Scheme, strengthening the national innovation ecosystem and encouraging continued efforts by institutions such as MSRIT to establish dedicated ideation and prototyping facilities.
The MSRIT AICTE IDEA LAB was formally inaugurated by Dr. Parswanath H. V., Chief Executive, Gokula Education Foundation (Engineering & General Science).
The event was presided over by Dr. Karisiddappa, Chief Academic Advisor, GEF (E&GS), Sri G. Ramachandra, Chief of Finance, GEF (E&GS), and Dr. N. V. R. Naidu, Principal, Ramaiah Institute of Technology and Chief Mentor of the MSRIT AICTE IDEA LAB. Dr. G. M. Madhu, Professor and Head, Department of Chemical Engineering, M S Ramaiah Institute of Technology and Coordinator of the MSRIT AICTE IDEA Lab and Dr. Rama Sivakiran Reddy, Co-Coordinator of the MSRIT AICTE IDEA Lab.
The ROSNAUT Club from the ECE Department supported the inauguration function.
Dedicated professionals driving innovation and excellence in our laboratory.
The IDEA Lab serves as a dynamic platform for RIT undergraduate and postgraduate students, faculty, and researchers, dedicated to the development of multidimensional skills. It bridges academic learning with real-world applications by enabling students to work on interdisciplinary projects and gain hands-on experience.
Engineering students actively engage with industries across manufacturing and service sectors, and the IDEA Lab provides a collaborative ecosystem where they can further enhance their learning through internships, innovation, and experimentation. The platform fosters a culture of interdisciplinary collaboration, bringing together students from diverse domains to create a heterogeneous and innovation-driven environment.
Foundation for Establishing AICTE IDEA Lab at MSRIT
Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Muddenahalli, located near the scenic Nandi Hills, is a premier academic and research center established in the birthplace of Bharat Ratna Sir M. Visvesvaraya.
The AICTE–ATAL Model IDEA Lab at VTU is a pioneering initiative aimed at promoting innovation, experiential learning, and interdisciplinary research. It provides access to advanced technologies enabling students and faculty to transform ideas into working prototypes.
Dr. G. M. Madhu and Dr. Rama Sivakiran Reddy actively participated in the Basic Faculty Development Program held from 6th–10th May 2025 at VTU Muddenahalli. This program played a crucial role in shaping the vision and implementation of the MSRIT AICTE IDEA Lab.
The FDP provided a structured framework for establishing and managing IDEA Labs effectively. Based on the insights gained, a set of core workflow patterns were identified to guide innovation, prototyping, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
MSRIT has further expanded these workflows to suit campus-specific needs, integrating departments such as MBA, Architecture, and other disciplines. This expanded approach enables cross-functional collaboration and strengthens the innovation ecosystem within the institution.
The IDEA Lab now acts as a central hub where ideas are nurtured, prototypes are developed, and students gain practical exposure aligned with industry and research requirements.
